Accreditation is a mark of quality assurance. Moreover, accreditation ensures that education provided by institutions of higher education meet or exceed acceptable levels of quality.

The National Association of Schools of Music establishes accreditation of educational programs as well as curricular standards and guidelines. NASM is also the only accrediting agency covering the entire field of music recognized by the United States Department of Education. The Association is composed of approximately 650 member institutions, including conservatories, public and private colleges, universities, and music schools. Accreditation Purposes

The National Association of Schools of Music was founded to secure a better understanding among institutions of higher education engaged in work in music; to establish a more uniform method of granting credit; and to develop and maintain basic, threshold standards for the granting of degrees and other credentials.

The Association’s main role is that of a specialized, professional accrediting agency. Accreditation is the process whereby an association or agency recognizes an institution as having met certain qualifications or standards. In NASM, the process also focuses on two principal concerns: educational quality and institutional integrity.

Value and Benefits

NASM Membership involves far more than a periodic accreditation review that includes self-study, an on-site visit, Commission action, and public notice of accredited institutional membership. It provides more than the immediate benefits and improvements that usually occur during and after this process. Participation in NASM also means shouldering important institutional responsibilities for music, and particularly for its place and role in higher education. This page outlines the principal ways NASM supports institutions and faculties, and how NASM combines the strengths of all members to serve the whole field.
