Ableton Live Scale Effect
Icon Instructor Paul Laski aka P-Lask takes you into Ableton Live in this video and demonstrates how to use Live’s Scale MIDI Effect. Paul also walks you through the various device controls and explains how they transform incoming MIDI data.
Scale Overview
Live’s Scale MIDI Effect is a convenient tool for those learning music theory or anyone looking to accelerate their workflow. This extremely helpful device forces an incoming note pitch to the closest note in a specific scale. For example, if you are working in A minor, Scale will automatically convert all notes played outside the scale to notes within A minor. This ability makes Scale the perfect companion when jamming out melodies and chord progressions. Scale ensures the correct notes in a particular scale are always being played. In addition, this method assures your melodies and chord progressions sound musical.
Scale also works great for quickly auditioning melodies in different pitches to discover musical variations. For example, Scale’s Transpose slider can raise or lower the pitch of incoming MIDI notes by +/- 36 semitones. Therefore, you could shift a melody written in C major to G major by setting Transpose to +7 semitones.
